For those of you who might be unaware of our journey as a brand, we actually started up solely as a clothing line. Although our concept and aim has always been the same, Bon Vita was initially only known as a fashion brand; delivering concept pieces and garments with empowering messages. We didn’t have this blog – we actually only started it in January 2015. We identify ourselves as a positive lifestyle brand, and so when people ask if we’re still involved in clothing, we say “Yes, we make clothing, we have a blog and plan to do much more.” With Bon Vita, it’s all about creating a culture. For the sake of this post, we won’t focus on Bon Vita’s beliefs, aims, direction or what we have planned for the future. However, we will go back in time and tell you why Bon Vita started. As the founder of Bon Vita, apart from my love for fashion, our existence in this particular industry was heavily inspired by a short-story. After reading this story, you’ll start understanding more about the power of intention through statements.

Short Story

There was a guy I once knew who used to spend a lot of time and money investing in his appearance. He didn’t actually have that much money, but what he did have was big dreams. He also wanted to be respected and appreciated by others. Whenever he attended public events, his swagger would always be on point; tailored yet contemporary clothing that looked prestige. He would collect compliments throughout the night and people would assume he was wearing the latest designer gear when in actual fact, all he had done was put a few good pieces of independent clothing together to form an “interesting” outfit. I say interesting because all those that saw him at these public events assumed he was “something” – possibly a celebrity, but they weren’t quite sure who he was. This made him mysterious and almost made people want to get to know him, including myself.

When I managed to speak to him at an event a few months later, we actually shared very similar interests and eventually became friends. It was only then that I had the authority to ask him what he does for living. His response was pretty vague but it was also to the point. He said:

“I work in a call centre, it’s alright but I want to be a music sensation. People seem to think I’ve already made it because I spend so much time on the way I appear in public, but I’m not there yet… But I know I will be soon, I can feel it and that’s why my hat says SUPERSTAR on it.”

We’re not going to reveal the identity of the individual in this story due to confidentiality. What can be said though, is that this particular individual has gone on to become one of the biggest acts in the UK and they’ve also made their mark worldwide! The power of intention through the statement on his hat was very clear; he became the superstar that his hat already claimed that he was! He was representing his ideal life way before his time; he was creating an impression with people way before he made it his reality. His appearance, his beliefs and the fact that he was accepting the reality he wanted, as if he already had it, helped him manifest what he is and has today.

J. Cole Example

J. Cole is an American rapper, writer and producer. Despite having jobs as an ads salesman at a newspaper and a bill collector, he is now living his dreams. In the video above, J. Cole claims that after watching 50 Cent’s movie ‘Get Rich of Die Tryin,’ he was inspired to make a t-shirt with a bold statement that read: “Produce for Jay-Z or Die Tryin.”

So what happened next? Well his intention was definitely heard by the universe. With his goal set, and his great work ethic partnered with his self-belief, J. Cole was contacted by Jay-Z and successively signed to his record label Roc Nation, in 2009. In the video, J. Cole mentions that he thought he could take a different route to becoming a rapper by becoming noticed as a producer first, by the likes of Jay-Z of course. He wanted to create an avenue to his main goal, and that’s why he created this particular shirt. However, it seems that universe did more than just have him produce for Jay-Z; he actually became one of his artists. And of course, Jay-Z has appeared on tracks with J. Cole, which he has produced himself. So it’s all manifested in one way or another! Be careful what you wish for, it might just come true!

Final Words

In our short story above, the individual mentioned was accepting his intention as if he already had it; he was controlling the way he perceives himself and how he’s perceived by others. You may have heard the phrase “Fake it till you make it” – well there’s a lot of depth and truth to this… And our story confirms it.

In the J. Cole example, he was boldly making his statement of intention, but this wasn’t as if he already achieved it; just with the certainty of what he wanted, and the fact that he would go all the way till the end to make it happen. Again, he was controlling how he was perceived by others by wearing the statement on a t-shirt. Most that saw him wearing this tee, would straight away assume that he’s a musician and knew what his goal was.

In both of the examples discussed in this post, it is clear that you need to be 100% sure of what it is you want and you need to be committed to it.  It is also clear that there is something magical about the power of intention through statements. It seems to set an impression on your own mind and enhances your belief. It’s the same as having your goals written down. The more you see the goal yourself, the deeper the impression becomes in your mind, thus giving the goal greater force. Making the statement visible to others can also influence the way you are perceived by others – thus becoming your reality instantaneously.
