They say that life is what happens while you are busy making other plans, and while that may be true in more ways than one, life is also what happens when you pay attention to the small things around you; things you can do or say, that might seem small and unimportant in the big scheme of things. These things, however, make life worth living. Do not postpone change and kindness, start today. The sooner you do, the sooner your quality of life and overall satisfaction will improve enormously, so let us start checking the list off.

Do not wait for life to give you lemons, go and buy some

For a great fresh start, kick off the day with a glass of lemon water. Not only will you feel a wave of instant energy, but the health benefits are amazing. There are at least sixteen perks of adopting this habit – body detox and better metabolism being only a few. It is amazing how something so simple and time-saving can have such a positive effect.

You are what you eat

Every Sunday night, you make a promise to yourself that you will start eating healthy, and every Monday morning you reach for fatty, carb-filled foods. Do not wait for another Monday, start this very minute. Cut those carbs, and switch to a protein-dominant diet. You will feel full and your energy level will be through the roof, and perhaps there will be the added bonus of losing those pesky few extra pounds. To keep yourself motivated, you can get a body measurement tracker and witness your progress day-by-day. An energised today leads to a fit tomorrow.

Mind over matter

In today’s fast-paced world of deadlines and meetings, stress is something we have become accustomed to, and we forget that this is not the natural state of things. Instead of trying to find time for yourself, make the time and escape the noise. Turn to meditation, yoga or any other activity that suits your sensibility. You matter, your serenity and mental well-being matter more than all the material things and success we are all chasing. If you are not happy with yourself at the end of the day, then all your efforts were in vain.

A well-rested mind is a productive mind

It is not seldom that you wake up feeling more exhausted than when you went to bed, and a night of non-quality sleep is almost as bad as no sleep at all. You should be able to wake up every morning rejuvenated and replenished, happy about life. There are a number of things, simple things, you can do to create an oasis in your own home and get the night of sleep you deserve. One of the things you could start with is sprinkling some lavender on your pillow, as its soothing effects are nothing short of miraculous.

Love thy neighbour (friend, stranger)

It might sound like a cliché, but when you put love out into the world, love will come back to you three-fold. Do small things, and not only will they make your day, but they will mean the world to those around you. Pay attention to details – when you receive a gift from a friend, do not just say ‘thanks’ over a text. Take 5 minutes out of your day and write an honest to goodness thank you card, expressing your gratitude for the thought and the token of love you have received, and your friends and family will love you all the more for it. When you leave the house in the morning, say a warm hello to your neighbour, let someone in front of you at the line in the supermarket. Smile at a random stranger on the street, we never know what someone else is going through and how much this simple act of kindness will mean to them. Compliment your colleague’s outfit or say ‘good work’ on a report they did – give a boost of confidence to those around you and just wait and see what karma will do for you in return.
