Staying resilient in this world isn’t an easy task. We’re constantly over-worked, over-stressed with debts, jobs, relationships that we don’t have time to focus on, our own mental and physical well-being. Instead of chasing mindfulness, people are more concerned with chasing wealth. People think about their health only when they get sick, or when they experience severe burnout.

If you want to dodge that, here are some tips that can help:

1. Unplug from social media

It’s probably easier said than done, but excessive social media use can lead to depression and anxiety. Seeing other people’s highs and lows (but mostly highs) can be inspiring and helpful sometimes, but if you often find yourself envying others, it’s time to unplug yourself from social media apps, at least for a certain period. Ask others to give you their phone numbers and emails so you can stay in touch. Going on a social media break can help you stop wasting time. If you can’t stop using Facebook, then try limiting your daily usage. Spending too much time online is definitely a must nowadays, but in case you feel overwhelmed by all the information you see, feel free to take a break and clear your thoughts.

2. Find the inspiration in the right places

Many people these days use the wrong people as role models and inspiration. Celebrities are definitely super-talented and hard-working, but at the same time, they have huge teams around them that make the magic happen. Admiring and enjoying the products of someone’s work is fine, but remember that there are many others who’ve managed to achieve tremendous success without being beautiful or having a fabulous voice. Some of them are entrepreneurs, authors, mental health professionals, journalists, teachers and engineers. Instead of worshipping famous people and social media personalities, turn to those who actually have valuable advice on how to improve your life. Watch podcasts and use every opportunity to learn from others. You can also find inspiration in your friends and relatives, especially those who’ve been through hardships that they’ve managed to overcome.

3. Set up the routine

It might seem difficult, but having a well-defined daily or weekly routine can help you a lot. Learning how to manage your time still counts as self-care. Caring about your time and how you spend it is important for your well-being. If you work in a high-paced job with long hours, at least try to improve the quality of your sleep and diet. Go to bed earlier and try to sleep for at least six hours. Use weekends to recharge your batteries, and if possible, avoid working from home. Your house should be a stress-free place. Before you enter, leave all the tension outside. Millennials are especially stressed so it’s important to have that one place to be free from all the pressure that modern life entails.

4. Treat yourself and learn to relax

A lot of people think that drinking after work or shopping is the way to treat yourself. Even though retail therapy can have positive effects, there are other ways to indulge yourself. It’s also important to use at least one day a week to relax. The best thing is, you don’t even need to go to a spa, you only need a bubble bath, some tropical candle supplies and your favourite music. That way, you can chill at the comfort of your home without spending a lot. Remember that self-care isn’t only about facial masks, but also finding time for yourself. Relaxing in peace should definitely be a part of your routine, especially if you’re constantly swamped with work. Working hard is great, but only if you remember to get some rest at least a few times a month.

5. Stop caring about what others think

Sometimes, it’s necessary to care, especially if other people are our clients or people we work for. At the same time, it’s important to learn not to get worried about what others might think or say. Your resilience is determined by how quickly you can recover from all the failures. And, honestly, a lot of mean people would rather see you fail. Did your co-worker hurt you by a snide remark? Just dust it off. You’ve read a comment you disagree with? Forget about it. Keep in mind that many people use the Internet to rant and some also enjoy being mean to others because they’re unhappy themselves. Of course, you shouldn’t be a punching bag, but also, try being stronger and resilient.

To summarise, there are ways to stay healthy and resilient, you just need to find what works for you. Never underestimate the power of rest, relaxation and self-care. As soon as you start practising them, your mind and body will thank you.
