It’s more than just an art, it’s a path to fulfilment.

When pen touches paper, or fingers touch keys, a new world is born. You have created a whole universe with just a thought. Have you ever stopped to think how incredible that is? Our civilisation is built upon stories, big and small, well-known and secret, our imaginations make the impossible, possible. Creative writing opens up a world of endless possibilities and new discoveries where we can express ourselves in any way we want. It is also a way to achieve a sense of well-being and fulfilment.

You are a creator

You don’t even have to be an author or have any qualifications, all you need is your imagination. When we write we strengthen our minds, we fortify memory, explore empathy and delve deep into our imaginations all of which helps us to grow as a person. Every sentence we write boosts confidence, if it doesn’t then it’s time to take a breath. Look at what you have written. Look at what you have created. That has come from you.

Set yourself creative goals

Setting yourself achievable goals is a brilliant way to feel fulfilled every single day. Even if your goal is simply to write another paragraph every day, you can do it and when you’ve done it, you’ll feel better. You’ve succeeded and will continue to succeed. If you’re struggling to find inspiration, take a moment to look around you. There’s plenty to be found in your own life, in the world around you and countless sources on the internet. Pick something that works for you, some people are inspired by music or pictures, others prefer to work from prompts. It doesn’t matter what your preference is, find it and let the creative juices flow.

Join the creative community

Nothing quite beats the feeling you get when you meet someone you have something in common with. Bring fulfilment to your life by reaching out to those people. There are communities everywhere if you know what to look for and they are welcoming. You can share your writing and ideas with them, they are supportive and constructive. If you aren’t feeling confident enough to do this yet, simply go to make friends, talk about creative writing and books you like. You’ll soon find they build you up and you will support each other.

Whether your writing is a hobby, a passion, a way of life or all three, by surrounding yourself with fellow creative writers you will empower each other. Every conversation will be exciting and something to look forward to as you never know what will come next. We are there to inspire each other.

Discovering yourself

Imagination creates stories but where does imagination come from? It is built through experience, we simply adapt it and make it into something greater. By diving deeper into our imaginations on a regular basis we discover more and more about ourselves. Getting to know yourself is an ongoing process that can spread over a lifetime. Our experiences mould us into who we are and that never stops. Personal growth is one of the most important parts of well-being and what better way to develop than by creating something fantastic? Research shows that those who live a creative lifestyle are more likely to feel that they have achieved a state of well-being.

Obstacles on the creative path

Creative writing can sometimes come along with stresses. The dreaded writer’s block, self-doubt and fear. They can come at any time and they have doubtlessly come to all the greatest writers as well as the newest writers. They are simply hurdles to overcome.

Beating writer’s block

The easiest way to beat writer’s block is to find inspiration. Artwork and music can be brilliant ways to give you that sudden spark you needed to finish the latest chapter or start the next piece. Writing prompts can give you a brand-new idea that you hadn’t considered before. You can also try something as simple as taking a walk, sometimes the environment around you will provide you with all the inspiration you need. Talking to other writers can also help, there’s no need to feel embarrassed, they’ll have most likely felt exactly the same way as you at some point.

Overcome self-doubt and fear

Self-doubt and fear can be a little more difficult to overcome. They can creep up when you’re least expecting it and bring your writing and your aspirations to a halt. That is the time to speak to other writers, friends, family or fans. Have them help you, their opinions will help you to understand what you can do to improve as well as what you do well. If you’re pursuing a career in creative writing, it can be particularly disheartening when you don’t hear back from a publisher or an agent. It shouldn’t stop you though. Read about how other authors dealt with the competitive industry, how many times did JK Rowling get rejected before the first Harry Potter got published?

You can always write, you can always create and when you do you will fulfil your goals. Always take the time to think on all you have achieved, no matter how big or small. Your dreams create worlds.
