Are you looking for scientifically-backed methods that will enable you to quiet your mental state and calm your mind? Then this article is for you. The human mind is filled with a lot of emotions, worries, anxieties and stress.

On a daily basis, we are bombarded with lots of information ranging from consistent phone calls, thousands of social media posts, highway billboards etc. The unfortunate incident is that our daily busy lives are characterized with information overload, and there is a need to calm our minds.

Some individuals like Buddha and his school of thought believed that meditation is the surest way to calm one’s minds. Further researches have also proven that there are other time-tested and proven tricks that can calm your mind. They are:

1. Focus on slow and deep breaths

Taking a deep breath has multiple health benefits. Research says that it is one of the most important parts of meditation and mindfulness. Soften your gaze or close your eyes, and let the breath enter your body through your mouth or nose.

Taking a deep breath helps you to come back to focus, feel alive and keeps you active to do further tasks. Slowing down our breaths bring our mind and body to equilibrium.

2. Engage in vigorous, rhythmic exercise

Exercise is a healthy outing. The importance of exercise can never be overemphasized. It is a good way of getting you out of your thoughts and body, helping you remain active. Engaging in vigorous, rhythmic exercise routine is highly therapeutic.

Engaging in some exercises like running, swimming, jogging, playing football, lawn tennis, table tennis, volleyball etc are very effective even if you just do them for few minutes. Regular or consistent exercise guarantees weight loss; if you want to lose weight, then engaging in physical or mental exercise is a necessary condition.

When you engage in physical exercise, your body will release mood-boosting hormones such as endorphins. Exercising helps you to migrate to a state of positivity and healthy nature.

3. Get up and get going

If you are going through hard times, don’t feel frustrated or agitated, instead, come up with a solution that will help you fix the problem. When you are weighed down by anxieties, worries, stress or uncertainties of life, simply get up, move around or engage yourself in different kinds of activity; such as chatting with your friends, family, loved ones, peers, and colleagues.

When you do this, you will discover that you are operating from a different perspective. You will live better, feel relaxed and stay happy.

4. Practice mindfulness

You can practice mindfulness at all times by observing your thoughts; this is better than reacting adversely to your thoughts. See your thought as mere clouds floating by, which sometimes drive you crazy. It is better for you to observe your thoughts, instead of reacting adversely to them.

5. Have a good night’s rest

Reduce the volume of noise going on in your head, and try to find some time to rest. As you lay on your bed to sleep, are the thoughts in your head refusing to calm down so that you can sleep?

Are you weighed down by worries of how to pay your credit cards, the anxieties of how to commit to the vast number of appointments the next day, how to prove to your spouse that you truly love them, etc? All these are serious thoughts that can prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep.

The National Institute of Mental Health in a recent study confirms that millions of people are struggling with anxiety on a daily basis. In North America, anxiety has over time become a serious mental health issue, affecting about 18% of adults (approximately 40 million Americans).

Other researchers say that the number might be higher than this estimate because most people suffering from anxiety don’t seek treatment or even know they have such a problem.

So, try to reduce the volume of noise going on in your head and prepare your mind for a good night’s rest whenever you lay on your bed at night. Be grateful for your blessings; be grateful for your loved ones.

If you can’t sleep, simply get out of the bed and meditate. This will help you to focus, relax and tune in to your innermost thoughts etc.

Calming your anxious mind is a possibility, and these 5 proven tricks will help you do it. Focus on slow and deep breaths, engage in vigorous, rhythmic exercise, get up and get going, practice mindfulness, and get some great sleep.

Try it for yourself and see how it works for you. Feel free to share your experience in the comments below and share this post with your friends and family. After all, sharing is caring!
