A superfood is a food which is rich in nutrition and is considered to be beneficial for your health and well-being. Below we have summarised five of the best superfoods around:

1. Acai

What makes it SUPER? The Acai berry is a fruit which comes from Acai palm trees. It is similar to a grape in terms of looks and shape. Acai berries contain antioxidants, fibre and healthy fats which are good for your heart. In addition, Acai can help with a range of health issues such as weight loss, high cholesterol, skin concerns and arthritis.

2. Chia seeds

What makes it SUPER? Chia seeds were first used by Aztecs and are amongst the healthiest foods on the planet! One ounce of chia seeds have around 12 grams of carbohydrates, however 11 of these grams are fibre which mean only 1 gram is an actual carbohydrate. Fibre is good because it will not raise your bodies insulin or blood sugar levels and it will keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Chia seeds are also high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. The protein levels for chia seeds are very high, making them great for those who don’t eat meat. It has also been proven that chia seeds can help to improve type 2 diabetes and bone strength. They contain calcium, magnesium and phosphorus which are great for keeping bones healthy. In a study, 20 diabetic patients were given chia seeds for a period of 12 weeks and by the end of the period there were significant improvements in the benchmarks relating to type 2 diabetes.

3. Kale

What makes it SUPER? Kale is a vegetable and specifically a member of the cabbage family. It is extremely low in calories and one of the most nutrient dense foods that exist. It contains vitamin A, K, C, B6, Manganese, Calcium, Copper, Potassium and Magnesium.

Kale also contains bile acid sequestrants. Without going into the details, this substance can help to reduce cholesterol levels in the body which can help to reduce the risk of heart disease. In addition, kale is packed with substances that are believed to have great fighting properties against cancer.

4. Quinoa

What makes it SUPER? This is the most popular superfood in the world. It is a grain crop which is grown for it’s seeds. There are three types of quinoa: red, black and white. Quinoa is very high in protein, containing 8 grams of protein per cup. It contains all the essential amino acids, making it a great source of protein for vegetarians and vegans.

Quinoa is another superfood that helps reduce type 2 diabetes or reduce your blood glucose levels if you already have diabetes. It is packed full of complex (healthy) carbohydrates which will have you feeling fuller for longer and aid weight loss.

5. Salmon

What makes it SUPER? Salmon is packed with Vitamins A, B and D. It is also full of iron, calcium and omega-3 fatty acids, which according to studies help your brain and can improve memory. The fact that salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids is also good news for your heart as it helps to reduce the chances of major cardiovascular diseases.

Salmon is a great source of protein with almost 22 grams per 100 gram serving. It should definitely be added to your diet if you are working towards getting a set of abs! Improved mood and energy are also benefits of eating salmon, so if you are feeling drained maybe you should try and incorporate some salmon into your diet to give you the kickstart you need.
