Year upon year, when the World Health Organisation release their life expectancy figures, Japan always seem to be one of the top 5 countries in the world (if not the top). Many people in Japan have a popular habit of drinking water immediately after waking up every morning. They believe that it provides a number of health benefits and also helps cure a number of diseases, such as high blood pressure and even cancer, amongst others. Could they be on to something? They also have over 50,000 people over the age of 100 living in their country. They’re definitely doing something right! Whether you believe this practise will cure diseases or not, there’s a lot to learn from the Japanese. Below, we explore 5 benefits of drinking water first thing in the morning:

1. It gets your metabolism going. That’s right – it’s like an alarm clock for your metabolism. Drinking the amount that the Japanese recommend will actually boost your body’s metabolism by about 24%. If you’re trying to lose weight then this is especially beneficial because it improves your calorie-burning potential throughout the day, as well as curbing your appetite so that you make smarter choices for breakfast and every other meal of the day.

2. As mentioned above, it cures illnesses and diseases. Now, some may think that this idea is absurd, but it’s actually been proven to cure things such as tuberculosis, arthritis, eye diseases, diarrhoea, vomiting, headaches, throat diseases and many more. You can have a look around on the internet for more information. Regardless of what you believe, we all know that water is great for you. So even if you don’t think that this practise will be miraculous in any way, it will still affect your health in a positive manner.

3. Water helps you flush out toxins. Your kidneys will be able to cleanse and get rid of toxins that have been released overnight, with an adequate intake of water in the morning. As a result, you’ll be able to absorb more nutrients from a well-balanced breakfast. This also helps make your skin glow, as water removes toxins from your blood.

4. It rehydrates your body and brain. You must remember that your body is 72% water and your brain tissue is 75% water! Most of us sleep for at least 6 hours; that’s 6 hours without water. This can make you feel drained or even have mood fluctuations. Our cells are also deprived of this much needed water. Having it in the morning will leave you feeling sharp and on the ball!

5. Drinking water first thing in the morning helps you balance your body’s lymph system. The lymph glands that are found in your lymph system help you perform your daily functions, fight infections and also balance the fluids in your body.

The Japanese Method

This is the actual method that the Japanese use to help cure illnesses and diseases. Here’s the instructions:

1. Drink 4 x 160ml glasses of water (ideally warm water – or at room temperature) as soon as you wake up. Before you brush your teeth or have breakfast that is. At first it can be quite difficult consuming so much water in one go, first thing in the morning. Your body gets used to it after a while. Initially, if you struggle, stick to 2-3 glasses or so. Or you can have a few glasses and take a break for a minute or two, and then consume the rest. If you’re old or sick, drink as much as you can and try and gradually build it up.

2. Brush your teeth and don’t eat anything until 45 minutes have passed. Once you have had breakfast, we recommend that you do not consume anything for another 2 hours. You can drink fluid within the first 15 minutes after having breakfast, but then not for another 2 hours after.

3. This applies to all your other meals too. Do not drink fluid for 2 hours after the meal, but if you wish to drink fluid within the first 15 minutes after the meal, that’s fine.

As we mentioned before, even if you don’t believe that water can cure disease, we have outlined why water can have a positive impact on your health and life. There’s really no harm in trying it. From personal experience, it definitely helps you feel more refreshed and gives you more natural energy throughout the morning.
